H2Pro - Hydration
Hydration, Hydration, Hydration!
This is a key factor, which I am a total stickler for. I always wake up in the morning desperate for water, regardless of how much I drink the night before. Now I’m not the type of person who sweats a lot when they sleep - you should see Nathan Hughes the man mountain at Wasps for someone who sweats – but I still obsess about hydrating as soon as I’m up.
Even though I am always drinking water, I find myself getting easily dehydrated. I really struggle to perform when training and I notice a big difference in my performance; whether that’s in the gym, on the rugby field, or even just doing little fitness top ups. I have always drunk large volumes of water, so much so that when I was younger my mum had me tested to make sure there wasn’t a problem with my kidneys or liver. I would literally drink a jug-full of liquid throughout a meal. Thankfully I was given the all clear but my need to hydrate remains to this day.
I came across H2Pro when training with the England Rugby team. That elite environment is all about finding the 1% that makes the difference to the players and Hydration has been found to be one of those areas that can really improve performance.
H2Pro have created an effervescent, electrolyte replacement supplement, called Hydrate. What’s unique about their offering is that it is specifically tailored to the amount of sodium that you loose. The guys at H2PRO came in and sweat tested us first before telling me what product I needed to take. The range is color coded to specify which you need.
For example when they tested me I was middle of the range, whereas some of the other boys lost a lot of salt and became quite dehydrated thus needing more replenishment. This is why all their products come in a number of different strengths from 250 up to1500, and are all color-coded for easy reading.
H2PRO the gave the measurements to the England S & C team so they could then give the appropriate bottle of water and tablet for just the right amount. We would take it post our morning workout on say a Tuesday, which was normally the toughest training day of the week and this would mean that for the afternoon session the guys would be replenished and ready to perform.
To start my day in the right way when I wake up, I have a large pint of water and drop one of the tablets in. I really can notice a big difference to how hydrated I am and how I perform that day. Conversely I notice if I have not followed this usual regiment.
The simplest way to know if you are hydrated or not, even though not desirable to some is to check the color of your urine. If you match it to the chart below you will see that the clearer the better. Do note however that certain supplements like multi vitamins such as Berroca will change the color of your urine and not give you an accurate reading.
For people who do a lot of training but are really busy then this is a great product for you. A lot of people start their day by going straight in to having tea and coffee, these are diuretics so if you are dehydrated already you are in danger of worsening the situation. Water first.

Yes there are some other companies doing similar products, however not the way H2PRO has done it. With the simplicity and ability to choose your appropriate level this makes life a whole lot easier.
