Haskell and Hannah Head List at Top Regional Awards Ceremony

WASPS star James Haskell, man of the series in England’s historic 3-0 Test triumph in Australia, was unveiled as the professional Sportsman of the Year in last night’s prestigious Coventry & Warwickshire Regional Sports Awards.

The professional/elite sportswoman award went to Hannah Cockcroft ahead of another Rio Champion, track cyclist Megan Giglia, and Warwickshire and England cricketer Becky Grundy.

Coventry Telegraph editor Keith Perry said in his speech: “The Telegraph this year celebrates its 125th anniversary. We have been at the heart of the communities we serve ever since being launched as the Midland Telegraph in 1891.

“Like the Telegraph, sport also plays a vital role in our community so it is wonderful that we are able to serve, ever since being launched, to highlight the achievements of some of the amazing people in our region.

“The people we will meet tonight come from a wide range of sports, they are both professional and amateur, famous and unsung”

“The greatest assets we have is the unbeatable combination of successful role models who can inspire a new generation into sport and a thriving grassroots community of clubs, coaches and volunteers who are both willing and able to turn that inspiration into participation. That is what the awards will hopefully show and celebrate tonight.”
