New details have emerged of England’s watershed team meeting on Monday, and the significant role played by defence coach Mike Ford in delivering an emotional rallying call designed to kick-start the World Cup campaign.
Ford, who was part of England's coaching team when they reached the World Cup final in 2007, gave an in-depth presentation to the players at the soul-searching meeting in the team’s hotel in Dunedin, following disappointing displays in the Pool B victories over Argentina and Georgia.
Ford challenged the players by warning them that the World Cup was a “once in a lifetime” opportunity which they would “live or die by”.
“He hit the nail on the head that this World Cup could be over faster than you realise it,” said James Haskell, who starts at No 8 against Romania on Saturday after Nick Easter was ruled out with a back injury.
“He [Ford] said: ‘You have given up so much time and committed so much to waste an opportunity that maybe you will only get once in a lifetime, or for others it will be a last opportunity. It’s no good thinking and waiting for the next one in England in 2015. This is reality. You have made these sacrifices, left wives, girlfriends. families and children at home. Your careers are defined by tournaments like the World Cup, you live and die by them’.”
Haskell, who has been England’s most impressive forward so far, said Ford’s oration had a massive impact on the squad.
“It struck a chord,” Haskell added. “Mike spoke fantastically well and everyone came out really buoyed and really positive. People got that renewed force and that has been shown in training this week.”
Haskell revealed Ford also highlighted the opportunity that Ireland’s victory over Australia had presented to England to achieve “something great” in New Zealand by talking through, game by game, their possible route to the final.
England are likely to face Ireland or Wales in the semi-final, rather than Australia, if they win Pool B and defeat likely opponents France in the quarter-finals. Mark Cueto, who will make his first start of the tournament on the left wing having missed the opening two games with a back injury, said the meeting had been a “reality check”.
“We’ve been criticised hugely for the two performances. Maybe rightly so for certain areas of the game, but ultimately we’ve scored nine points from a possible 10,” Cueto said. “So if we can do that playing badly then hopefully we’ve got a lot to come.”
